Summertime is for vacationing, a time for fun as well as relaxing after months of hard work. But, for those who are on a diet, or simply want to stay healthy, getting through vacations can be an arduous challenge.

However, have no fear! Vacations are a break from work, but that doesn’t mean a break from healthy living.
3StepDiet® wants to go on a trip with you and provide some tips to be able to have a vacation without getting (too much!) out of line.

Set goals

If your goal is to lose weight and you go on vacation to an all-inclusive resort with an array of tempting foods available, you are likely to find it challenging to not give in. It may be necessary to adjust your goal for the time being. Switch to keeping the results you’ve already achieved. Focus on maintaining and when you return home, get back to losing weight mode.

Stay Hydrated

Did you know that we often confuse the feeling of hunger with thirst or that drinking water can help you control your appetite? The distention of the stomach wall is responsible for producing certain compounds that signal your brain that it is full. By drinking enough water, in addition to ensuring your hydration, especially if you are exposed to the sun, you will be able to better regulate your appetite and better manage your food choices. Don’t forget that herbal teas and flavored waters count as well as water-filled veggies!

Create Routines

We may go on vacation to get away from our routine life, but to keep health on your mind we encourage you to create new routines. At least try to make sure you eat your meals at more or less regular times and that you don’t skip any of them. By skipping meals, you can make your appetite bigger for the next one which makes it much more difficult to choose options that align with your goals. Also try to stick with an exercise regimen. Have fun experimenting with new ways to stay active. This will help you enjoy the vacation food even more!

Get Moving

Physical activity is one of the fundamental pillars of our health and wellness. It’s also the most efficient way to burn some of those extra calories you consume while celebrating on vacation. Every little bit counts, too. Explore your surroundings on foot or by bicycle. Try out new water sports to flex muscles that don’t often get used. Simply play in the pool. Did you know that water exercises can help you lose weight quicker than those done on land? That is because the resistance of the water adds intensity and also provides a full body workout.

Take Advantage of Breakfast

A hotel or resort breakfast tends to be more varied than what you would normally have at home, but that also means having healthy foods available. Look for eggs, yogurt, fruit, and whole grain breads/cereals to enjoy.

By starting your day with a balanced and filling breakfast, you will set the tone while fueling up for those fun activities!

Opt for Accommodations with Kitchens

Having a kitchen or kitchenette is key to creating some healthy meals and snacks to keep yourself nourished. This not only provides better control of your food intake, but it can also be a fun way to tune into the seasonal, fresh produce of your vacation location.

Moderate Alcohol

Vacations and alcohol are inseparable for many people. The trick is to enjoy it in moderation. In addition to providing mostly “empty” calories (without any nutritional value) alcohol also interferes with fat loss, by reducing its conversion into energy by the liver.

Live it Up

More than what you’re going to eat on vacation, don’t forget that this is your time to take advantage of your favorite activities with those you love. And having a good time doesn’t necessarily have to be synonymous with just splurging on food and drinks. Play, swim, explore, visit a museum, read a book, chat… These and many other activities can add color to your vacation without weighing you down.
